Responsible design and production

At MAAMI HOME, we are as committed and passionate about the environment as we are about our work. In that sense, we've been introducing different design practices that seek greater environmental responsibility. Right now, we are conducting a number of internal studies and projects with various institutions, aimed at developing the conditions needed for creating unique products based on the types of waste generated in our factory. For Sérgio Costa, reusing materials to create appealing pieces has become one of MAAMI's main goals: "Our plans are to use all marble waste in the best way possible. Marble is so precious and rare that it must be reused, even if it's in this raw state."

Circular water recycling system

MAAMI HOME proactively saves water every day, with every piece our team makes. By sourcing our water from our very own on-site well, we estimate that we save over 2 million litres of water from the mains water supply each year, that's almost the equivalent of an Olympic-sized swimming pool! Not to forget the rain water collection system on our roof!

Marble production is known for requiring a lot of water to cool down the tools, that's why MAAMI Home made sure to focus on improving resource use and introduced a circular water recycling system. All the water used in production is collected through the floor gullies and directed to the filtration system. After the filtration process, the by-product- marble slurry is collected for future use and the clean water goes back into circulation.

Plastic-free packaging

Another key example is the attention we pay to product packaging. We are the first Portuguese company in this sector to use 100% biodegradable packaging and to be 100% plastic-free. From the fully recyclable and biodegradable internal fittings to the wood of the boxes, the paper-based tape, and the bags for the screws that are supplied with the products, our entire packaging system is striving to be environmentally friendly.

Our team has a packaging designer, Monica Oliveira, who is dedicated to constantly innovate and keep up to date with the industry innovations, finding certified suppliers to implement new ways we can deliver our products to the customers with lower carbon footprint.

Upcycled designs / Design philosophy

As we strive to follow the philosophy of responsible production and design, MAAMI Home team has an upcycled range collection that exemplifies our commitment to sustainability.
